Memorial exploring merger

LUDINGTON – Memorial Medical Center is planning to form a partnership with larger healthcare systems. The hospital has sent a letter to its employees.

According to a statement Mason County Press has obtained, the hospital’s board of directors has voted to pursue partnership discussions with larger, integrated healthcare systems as a way to better meet the healthcare needs of the community and as a way to preserve Memorial.

Juniper Avisory LLC of Chicago has been hired to advise the hospital on possible partnerships. Juniper is an independent, privately-held investment banking firm dedicated to providing hospital clients with merger, acquisition and other financial advice, according to the company’s website.

According to the statement MCP received, when the process is completed by the end of 2013, the hospital’s board may decide that the process has provided a great partner or it may decide that the hospital is better suited to continue operating as an independent healthcare facility.

“It is important to note that MMC’s financial health is good,” the statement said. “The time to look for partners is when we’re strong, not when we’re in trouble. We believe now is the right time. MMC will keep the community apprised of our progress while evaluating opportunities for possible partnerships.”

Larger healthcare systems within a 100 mile radius of Ludington include Mercy Health Partners in Muskegon, Spectrum Health of Grand Rapids and Munson Healthcare in Traverse City. It is not uncommon for the hospital to frequently send patients to hospitals in Muskegon and Grand Rapids, according to ambulance radio traffic.

MCP has been told by a source that an official statement will be released Wednesday morning.
