VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Educational Service District Career & Technical Education (CTE) Allied Health students recently competed at the state Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition against other high school students from around the state for a chance to advance to the HOSA International Leadership Conference. A total of 2,525 students from Michigan took part in the competition. Many local students took top spots and will be moving on to the national competition in Nashville, Tennessee.

HOSA is the largest international organization for middle school, high school and postsecondary students with an interest in health professions. The organization has over 4,000 chapters in 48 states, 115 of which are in Michigan.

“Competition at the state level is becoming very tough. Many schools have four year programs; our program is only one,” said Sally Wright, CTE Allied Health instructor. “With the addition this year of a middle school division, the competition will only continue to increase. This is a great testament to the work our students do and the level they are performing.”

Students competed in several categories including: CPR/first aid, forensic science, HOSA quiz bowl, public service announcement, medical reading, veterinary science and nurse assisting.

The following students earned top placement in the following categories and the top three in each category were invited to attend the HOSA International Leadership Conference competition in Nashville this June:

CPR/First Aid

1st place Gold Medal: Brooke Thurow and Tirzah Wood (both Mason County Central)

2nd Place Silver Medal: Logan Merrick and Zacary Wright-Fisher (both MCC)

HOSA Quiz Bowl

3rd Place Bronze medal: Megan Scott, Hannah Peterson, Brett Brown and Kaci Kuster (all Ludington High School)
