Corrections officers graduate from WSCC academy.

VICTORY TWP. – A group of area corrections officers recently completed West Shore Community College’s Corrections Officer Training Program, a Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) approved 320-hour certification program for personnel supervising inmates in state prisons.

The academy program focuses on providing the skills necessary to maintain safety and security within a correctional facility. During a 14-week period, the academy covers over 50 topics, including defensive tactics, firearms, restraints, substance abuse, and first aid.

“This was our inaugural academy for the Department of Corrections, and it was a great way to start,” said Dan Dellar, WSCC’s Director of Criminal Justice.

He added, “All of the graduates did an outstanding job during the academy. They will be doing a difficult and often thankless job, but they showed themselves to be true professionals from day one. They will do very well in their careers.”

Another session of the academy will begin in January 2015.
