VICTORY TOWNSHIP — High school seniors from four area schools learned lessons in finances today during the annual Financial Reality Fair held at West Shore Community College. The event was sponsored by WSCC, Filer Credit Union, Mason County College Access Network and the Michigan Credit Union Foundation.
Participating schools included Mason County Eastern, Mason County Central, Onekama and Casman Academy.
During the fair students began with a set amount of “funds” and had to visit 12 different stations where they needed to make decisions on various purchases and investments, such as buying a vehicle or a home. Those decisions were between how much money to spend on a car or another item. At the end of the fair, they calculated all their selections, paid their bills and saw if they met their savings goals, which they set.
“Budgeting and finances are something that every single adult must deal with,” said Kyle Gurzynski, president and CEO of Filer Credit Union. “The decisions young adults make now, in regards to their finances, may impact them the rest of their lives. We created this event in a way where it’s fun but ultimately they learn how to manage their money. We are very thankful for the schools that were able to send their students to learn about this.”
