BRANCH TOWNSHIP — A 44-year-old Ludington man fled from Mason County sheriff’s deputies Monday afternoon with his pickup truck reaching speeds of 100 mph before it struck a building, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. He then attempted to run, but was captured by a deputy.
The sheriff’s office is seeking charges of fleeing and eluding police, operating while intoxicated and domestic violence.
“On Monday, March 31, 2025 at 1:55 p.m., a Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a business in the 6600 block of East US 10 to conduct follow-up related to a reported larceny of a dog and domestic violence case,” said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. “Deputies had originally responded to the business at approximately 8 a.m. However, the subject refused to come to the door to speak with deputies.
“As the deputy went into the business, he was informed the subject questioned — a 44-year-old Ludington, Michigan man — reportedly went out the back door. The deputy attempted contact with this person in the parking lot as he was attempting to get into a pickup truck. The deputy instructed the suspect he needed to speak with him. However, the suspect entered his vehicle and fled the parking lot.
“The deputy then attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect fled westbound on US 10 to Benson Road, then northbound on Benson, at speeds of 100 mph. The suspect attempted a right-hand turn onto Marshall Road, but did so at a speed too fast to negotiate the turn. The vehicle left the road and struck a building at the corner.
“The suspect then attempted to flee on foot, but was captured by the deputy and arrested.”
The suspect was lodged in the Mason County Jail after he was treated at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash.
A report will be filed with the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office, said Sheriff Cole.
