AMBER TOWNSHIP — A 20-year-old Ludington man was arrested after attempting to pull a pistol from his waistband during a traffic stop initiated by a Mason County sheriff’s deputy Friday, March 28, around 12:35 p.m., according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“… a Mason County sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop related to a driver who had been reported to be driving partly in the ditch on US 10 near Dennis Road,” said Sheriff Cole. “This was done near a traffic crash where a deputy was working traffic.

“The deputy conducted a traffic stop at Brye Road and Johnson Road on this vehicle after witnessing it driving partly in the ditch past him on US 10 and Dennis. As the deputy was speaking with the driver, this driver attempted to pull a pistol from his waistband. The deputy saw the suspect attempting to pull the handgun and drew his service weapon while reaching into the vehicle and grabbing the gun which was in the suspect’s hand. The deputy was then able to get the gun away from the suspect.”

The man was arrested on charges of felony assault on a law enforcement officer, and carrying a concealed weapon and possession of an unregistered handgun. A second handgun was recovered from the suspect vehicle, said the sheriff.
