SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central High School esports team recently received a $10,000 sponsorship from Ande Seat Gaming Chairs. The company has furnished chairs, lights and tables to the team, in its inaugural year.
“This donation has been a great gift to our team,” said Coach Tim Danielson. “Prior, our students had been using hard-back chairs with their equipment on desks. These chairs are much more ergonomic and the new tables add a higher level of professionalism.”
The team competes on the PlayVS platform and is part of the Michigan High School Esports League (MHSEL). It fields varsity Mario Kart 8 and varsity Super Smash Brothers Ultimate teams.
“This type of program builds a lot of great skills,” Danielson said. “Some of our team members may not normally participate in a school activity and this gives them a great opportunity to develop sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork.”
There are currently 11 members of the team, which is coached by Danielson and Marissa Rodriguez.
Danielson said students must maintain academic standards like any other extracurricular activity.
“That’s a great incentive for some of our students who may normally struggle with their grades. If they want to be part of this team, they have to maintain the standards.”
Most of the esports competitions do not require travel, Danielson said.
“That’s also a great incentive because travel can sometimes to be a challenge. We do anticipate some traveling,” he said. “We are looking forward to meeting up the Ludington High School team in person. That should be fun.”

Team members wait for a competition to begin.
