Marilyn “Mo” Jane Desmet, of Hamlin Township, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2025, at her residence. Marilyn was born in Detroit, the oldest child of Jacob and Gertrude Kling on January 31, 1941. She had two siblings, Joane Homberg and John Kling.
Marilyn was a graduate of Harper Hospital School of Nursing class of 1961 and spent her entire life serving others in the capacity of a registered nurse. She was first married to Owen R. Young and had two sons, Jeffery John Young and Mark Thomas Young before their divorce. Marilyn is survived by her loving siblings, sister Joane (Marne) Homberg and brother John (Janice) Kling; her oldest son Jeffery and his wife Janice; grandson Tyler Young; nephews Chris (Jen) Homberg and Tim Homberg; nieces Katherine and Kristen Kling; great-niece Charlotte Ann Homberg; and step-grandchildren through marriage to Jeff: Todd Bushard, Troy Bushard, Rick Bushard and Melissa Bachus; step-great-grandchildren Timothy, Alexis, Alex, Eian, Andrew, Jonathon, Brandon, Kyle; and her beloved Black Lab Hiedi (which was by her side at death).
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son Mark; and her first husband Owen.
Marilyn loved Ludington starting in childhood with vacations to a cottage owned by a relative on her mother’s (Ditmer) side of the family and camping trips to the Ludington State Park. The Ditmer cottage would eventually become the home of her parents. Marilyn remarried to Paul Desmet in the 80s, and together they built a home in Hamlin Township where she lived until death. Marilyn and Paul divorced, and she continued living in the home they built. She lived with her son Jeffery and his wife Janice for the past 11 years. While living in Ludington Marilyn worked at Ludington hospital, mostly in the Hadley section, until her retirement. Marilyn enjoyed boating on Hamlin Lake and driving through the Ludington State Park so she could see all the campers and the children playing.
Marilyn will be sorely missed by family, friends, nursing school classmates and colleagues. Some close friends that lived on her street helped her and kept tabs on her following her divorce; David Lange and Debra Morgan, who were her friendly angels for close to 20 years, checking on her and helping with whatever Marilyn needed. She will definitely be missed by all she came in contact with throughout the years. Love you, Mom, I know you are at peace with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ now you can rest in peace.
