Timothy James Cunningham

Timothy James Cunningham, 68, of Fountain, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025 after long struggles with his health.

Tim was born August 29, 1956 to Lawrence and Lorraine Cunningham in Warren. Healthy and hale Tim was overly fond of mashed potatoes and grew quickly into his nickname ‘Big Tim’. In his teenage years his family moved to Fountain where he made many friends and could often be found at Johnny’s, Emerson Lake Inn, the Oasis, or the Rendezvous.

Tim was an avid mechanic and welder, often searching for vehicles to fix up and turn around for a buck. For many years he would make trips on snowmobiles with his friends or family to Na-Tah-Ka or be found on backroads with his motorcycle. He was also incredibly fond of rock & roll, often quizzing his son on old bands and songs – and attending concerts to hear his favorites; Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, ELO, and all the old greats. Music was his way of getting away from the hardships of life for a minute and just enjoying the moment.

Tim would often tell stories where he performed superhuman feats and always won fights – but never picked a fight with his brother Larry as “He had some crazy moves”. Always a story for any occasion he was happy to tell you of the giant crappie he caught years ago, or the time his father caught a pheasant mid-air with just the sweater off his back.

He had a tough exterior but also moments of warmth, wit, and kindness. If you caught him in the right mood, he was happy to be a listening ear or one to give some solid advice; particularly if he knew a way for you to make some quick cash.

After nearly 20 years of medical issues he can only be described as one of the most mentally resilient men to ever call west Michigan home. The family would like to give a special thanks to every person who helped him along these trials – CNAs, nurses, AFC workers, and all who lent a hand in assisting him with his troubles over his last years.

Tim will be dearly missed, he is survived by: his brother, Larry; son, Tim; and numerous extended family and friends.

Tim was preceded in death by: his parents, Lawrence and Lorraine Cunningham; brothers, Alan and Ron Cunningham; nephew, Larry; and close friends, Chris Swantek and Brad Renwick.

A time for gathering will be held from 3-6pm Saturday, February 15 at Jamesport Brewery’s Red Room, 410 S James St, Ludington. The family encourages anyone who would like to attend to please come raise a glass, and share a story.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
