Local Dems to commemorate MLK Day by supporting “Cares” boxes

January 13, 2025

LUDINGTON — The Mason County Michigan Democratic Party will commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, by collecting items for the “Cares” community boxes. Representatives will be at the Ludington Cares box located at the Ludington branch of the Mason County District Library, 217 E. Ludington Ave. (box is located on Court Street behind the library) from 2 to 4 p.m. Also, at the library, members of the local Democratic party will commemorate King by sharing his words and history in poster art, song, and a reading of his “I Have a Dream” speech.

The “Cares” boxes are located in Ludington, Scottville, Custer, Fountain, and Free Soil and provide food and other essential supplies to those who may need extra help. People are encouraged to give to the boxes and take what they need. Supplies that are difficult to come by like personal toiletries, dish soap, and cleaning products are among the preferred donations. Hats, gloves and socks also are welcome.

Bambi Marie Malone created the first care box in 2017 in front of the Ludington.

“This is a compelling example of what one person can do in our community,” recognizes Liz Kannon, MCMD chair. “Whether you plan on cleaning up a public space, mentoring a young person, or assisting those who are food insecure or unhoused, what each of us do makes a world of difference. MLK Day is an opportunity to reflect on the ways we can each help make our community a better place.”

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
