LUDINGTON — Wally Cain wants the men of Mason County to step up and help out local charities. Inspired by the charitable-giving group Women Who Care of Mason County, Cain is forming Men Who Care of Mason County.

The group will meet for 30 minutes quarterly. During that meeting, attendees submit suggested local 501(c)(3) charitable organizations to be considered. Three suggestions are randomly chosen and then the man who made the suggestion gives a five minute pitch for that organization; he does not have to be affiliated with that organization but should be knowledgable about it. The group then votes and the winner receives the money collected from each individual. The funds are collected at the meeting or sent to the group’s post office box, PO Box 83, Ludington, MI 49431, and then given to the winning charity. The money must be used for a charitable cause in Mason County.

Cain said Men Who Care will not be a formal organization.

“There will be no by-laws. No election of officers. No bank account. No dues or fees,” Cain said. “Donations are given by each individual who commits to donate quarterly. Our mission is to harness the power of collective giving to support the needs of Mason County and to foster a spirit of community and generosity among local men.”

Cain said during the first gathering, the men will be asked to donate $50 each and will then decide if they want to keep that amount or change it.

Women Who Care of Mason County was formed in 2012 and now consists of 172 members. Since November of 2017, when the group was re-organized, 40 non-profits have received donations. Recently, the members agreed to increase their quarterly giving to $65, which means that the selected organization for each quarterly gathering will receive about $10,000. The first organization to benefit from that increase was the Oriole Giving Tree, which received $10,728 in December.

The first meeting of Men Who Care of Mason County will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at People’s Church, 115 W. Loomis St. Members of the group do not necessarily have to attend but those who do not attend are strongly encouraged to keep their quarterly financial commitment. Women Who Care of Mason County will meet again also on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church of Ludington, 5810 W. Bryant Road, Pere Marquette Township.
