Phyllis Larsen went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from Village Manor in Ludington, surrounded by family. Phyllis was born in 1928 to Ray and Ethel Switzer in Amble, Michigan. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1946 and married Versil Larsen in 1949. They spent 65 years together before he preceded her in death in December 2015. Also, preceding her in death were sister, Ruth (Carroll) Munshaw and brothers Wayne, and Max (Doris)Switzer.
She is survived by four children: Bonnie (Don) Koolen of Mesa Ariz., Viann (Peter) Priniski of Kalamazoo, Janise (Steven) Aubry of Ludington, and Nicholas (Deb) Larsen of Temecula, Cali. Also, she leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Phyllis had various jobs over the years including Bell Telephone in Detroit, dental assisting, and medical insurance billing in Lakeview and Big Rapids hospitals. She was very active in the United Methodist churches (Amble, Northland, and Ludington) and started playing the piano, then organ every Sunday for 35 years, beginning at just 14-years-old. 4-H was a big part of her life as a child, then as a leader while raising her own children.
After retiring, Versil and Phyllis spent their winters in Arizona for 18 years and went on many road trips throughout the U.S. and Canada visiting friends along the way. They also enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Europe. She was an accomplished quilter and gave many to her children and grandchildren until her failing eyesight prevented it. She also made sleeping bags for the homeless in Arizona using recycled blankets and men’s ties. Phyllis continued the sleeping bag project at the Methodist Church in Ludington and lost count of the hundreds made over the years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. A memorial service will be planned in the spring when family members can attend.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington, www.OakGroveLudington.com.
