AMBER TOWNSHIP — Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, who was re-elected to his fourth term on Nov. 5, swore in his deputies during a special ceremony Monday evening. The deputies are sworn in each new term. Sheriff offices in the State of Michigan are governed under Michigan Compiled Laws Act 51 of 1951, Chapter 14, which is a revision of state statutes of 1846.

Family members of deputies attended the ceremony held at Mason County Reformed Church while additional Michigan State Police troopers provided police coverage to rural Mason County. Cole thanked the members of the sheriff’s office and their families for their dedication to Mason County. He also asked each person attending to remember the sacrifice of MSP Trooper Paul Butterfield who was murdered while on duty in Mason County in 2013.

Cole will observe his 40th year of service to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office in 2025. He is also the only second-generation sheriff in Mason County. His great-great grandfather, Henry Cole, served from 1899-1902.

Members of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Unit and Special Victims Unit are sworn in Monday.
