Storm causing closings, power outages

December 11, 2024

A winter storm, which began Tuesday evening, has so far dumped over 7 inches of wet, heavy snow on the west side of Mason County causing multiple power outages. Fire departments have been responding to utility wires down since early this morning.

The storm has caused all Mason County schools and other facilities to close for the day and many school activities have been cancelled.

Signs of the changing weather began about 3 p.m. Tuesday when rain near the lakeshore began to freeze causing slippery conditions on US 31 freeway resulting in vehicles sliding off the road.

Weather observers in Ludington and Hamlin Township are reporting 7 inches of snow has fallen since early Tuesday evening. Accumulations in the eastern side of the county are less at 1 to 3 inches.

The area remains under a winter storm warning until 7 p.m. Thursday with an additional 5 to 11 inches of snow forecasted. Winds are expected to be west-northwest between 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching up to 35 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.
