AMBER TOWNSHIP — The annual Shop with a Cop/Hero events are underway this week. Children who may not be able to afford Christmas presents are matched with a police officer, firefighter, EMT, or military person to shop for their family. On Monday and Tuesday, select children were able to shop at Meijer with police officers from Ludington Police Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and Scottville Police Department. Tonight and Thursday will be Shop with a Hero at Walmart and will include shopping with local firefighters, EMTs, and military personnel.

Ludington Police Department School Resources Officer Conor Gallihugh, one of the event organizers, said 73 kids are participating in the event. Participating children are identified by counselors at their schools.

The program is funded through donations, mostly raised at the annual pie auction which takes place before Thanksgiving.

Volunteers also assist with wrapping presents and providing take-him snacks.
