SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central Spartans esports program fielded not one, but two teams into the Michigan High School Esports League (MHSEL) during its inaugural season.  The Spartans had their varsity Super Smash Brothers squad earn a berth in the 64 team bracket for the playoffs.  The Spartan Mario Kart 8 team raced to #16 in the state rankings.  The Mario Kart team won their first round playoff match.

“I knew that an esports team would be good for students at MCC,” co-coach Tim Danielson said. “Having two teams make the state playoffs in our rookie year is just incredible though.”

Danielson noted the many “soft skills” that esports can bring to a school culture including improved communication skills, accountability, dependability, teamwork, and improved socialization skills.

“I have a couple of students who have made a dramatic turn around in their grades, attendance and behavior from last year.  There are three students who made the ‘All Academic’ team for the league,” Danielson said, referring to MCC’s 3A focus of Academics, Attendance, and Attitude.

Co-Coach Marissa Rodriguez also highlighted the improved socialization skills.

“It was really cool to see the guys find new friends and be a part of the team,” Rodriguez said. “I’m really proud of their growth and I’m so happy that they made it so far in their rookie season.”

We are proud of the Mason County Central Esports teams for making the playoffs in our inaugural season,” MCC High School Principal Jeff Tuka said. “Our team has grown together as the season went on and enjoys the idea of competing against the state’s top teams.  This team has taken on the personality of its coaches and it shows.  The players have worked hard and had fun.  We congratulate our team and wish the best of luck to all playoff contenders. Go, Spartans.”
