Artist to teach Japanese art of folding and drying paper at WSCC

December 2, 2024

WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — Artist Allison Svoboda will teach traditional Japanese art of folding and drying paper on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at West Shore Community College.

The workshop will take place in WSCC’s Arts and Sciences building, room 128. Participants will learn different methods of folding absorbent paper and dipping it in non-toxic dyes to produce interesting geometric patterns.  When the folded paper is dipped in dyes it results in wonderful patterns and exciting color combinations. The colorful paper can then be used as wrapping paper, cards or art to be framed. Participants of all levels of experience are welcome. The workshop is free and open to the public. Supplies will be provided.

Svoboda is currently an artist in residence at WSCC.  She splits her time between Chicago and Pentwater. Svoboda is drawn to organic patterns and forms found in nature.

“I work intuitively through thousands of brushstrokes creating hundreds of small paintings,” said Svoboda. “I then collate the works together to create larger pieces.” More information on Svoboda’s works may be found at www.allisonsvoboda.com
