VICTORY TOWNSHIP — Brendan Kelley was recently hired as an agriculture water use efficiency educator for Michigan State University Extension. Kelley recently graduated from Michigan State with a master’s degree in bio systems  and agricultural engineering, focusing on optimizing irrigation practices to enhance water use efficiency in corn and soybeans.

His research experience spans soil moisture  monitoring,  nutrient  leaching,  and more. Kelley comes from southwest  Michigan. His background includes hands-on experience with irrigation systems on his family’s farm, where he cultivated field crops and raised livestock.

As the agriculture water use efficiency educator, Kelley will be supporting the western Michigan agricultural community. His work focuses on increasing water use efficiency in agriculture by promoting advanced water management techniques. Using tools like irrigation scheduling, soil moisture monitoring, and irrigation system assessments, Kelley aims to optimize water usage, reduce waste and improve crop yields. His position has an emphasis on vegetable and fruit crop irrigation and can be extended to any topic related to improving agricultural water use.

Kelley said he is eager to assist all those in the agricultural community with irrigation and water use concerns. He can be reached at kelle162@msu.edu or by phone at 231-845-3362.
