WSCC hosts artist Allison Svoboda

November 12, 2024

WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College is hosting artist Allison Svoboda for a series of exhibitions, workshops and community events titled “Earth as Our True Nature” throughout the 2024-2025 academic year.
Unlike a conventional exhibition where an artist will bring finished artworks to display, this series takes on a more organic approach with the artist producing new artworks on the main campus in the Manierre Dawson Gallery, located in the Arts & Sciences Building. Since October, Svoboda has been meeting WSCC students and working in the gallery, where the resulting works, titled “Fractal Found in Nature: Mandalas”, are now on exhibit.
The first community workshop, “Looking Closely at Nature: Creating a Mandala,” is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. Participants will meet the artist at the Manierre Dawson Gallery, learn about her process and make a mandala with her. The event is free and open to the public.
Svoboda splits her time between Chicago and Pentwater. She is drawn to organic patterns and forms found in nature. I work intuitively through thousands of brushstrokes creating hundreds of small paintings,” said Svoboda. “I then collate the works together to create larger pieces.”

More information on Svoboda’s works may be found at www.allisonsvoboda.com

Exhibition of the works will evolve, expanding into new spaces across campus and into off-campus sites as well. Anticipated upcoming exhibitions include “WaterWays: Ways of Water,” followed by “Blues: Cyanotypes.”

“Allison’s works remind us of our connection to nature and give us meaningful ways to study it,” said WSCC curator Eden Ünlüata-Foley. “Her deep familiarity with the local natural environment and global reach as a practicing artist makes her a natural fit to invite to WSCC campus to produce new works and share her process with our community.”
The current exhibition is viewable through the gallery windows Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The artist can often be seen working in the gallery. When present, viewers are invited to enter and engage her in conversation. Workshops and artworks installed both on and off-campus will be announced on the Gallery windows and through an email list.  If you have questions, please contact the curator at nfoley@westshore.edu.
