BRANCH TOWNSHIP — A 40-year-old Branch man was arrested Saturday following a county-long vehicle chase.
The situation began when the man allegedly assault his ex-girlfriend while driving on US 10 near Nelson Road in Pere Marquette Township Friday morning. At 10:27 a.m., the woman entered the Mason County Courthouse, 304 E. Ludington Ave. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, the woman was upset and reportedly crying. Cole said the woman approached courthouse security personnel and a court deputy and explained that she had allegedly been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend.
“Not knowing what to do, or how to get out of the situation, she told the male that she needed to be in court and drove to the courthouse,” Cole said.
“During the investigation, a deputy and a Ludington police officer approached the suspect, who was seated in a vehicle on the east side of the courthouse. When the deputy asked, the male subject to roll the vehicle window down, he fled in the vehicle. A short vehicle chase ensued in the City of Ludington before the suspect vehicle was lost.”
Cole said a deputy then spotted the suspect’s vehicle on US 10-31 near Stiles Road and attempted a traffic stop.
“The vehicle fled from the stop, northbound on Stiles and then eastbound on Johnson Road,” Cole said.
“The vehicle fled on various back roads throughout Amber, Custer and Branch townships before a deputy was able to successfully deploy “stop sticks” at US10 and Campbell Road, flattening three tires on the suspect vehicle. The suspect then fled on foot north through the woods but was captured after a lengthy foot chase.”
Cole said Mason County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Ludington Police Department, Scottville Police Department, Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Natural Resources law enforcement, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Branch Township Fire Department.
The man has been charged with domestic violence, fleeing and eluding police and resisting/obstructing police. He is lodged in the Mason County Jail.
