LUDINGTON — Sawyer Hendrickson, a Ludington High School sophomore has been chosen to attend Founding Forward’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program on November 7-10, 2024 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Sawyer was chosen by leadership at AMVETS through its National Americanism Contest and by the AMVETS National Ladies Auxiliary, for her continued work supporting servicemen and servicewomen and veterans with Miss Sawyer’s Kids With A Cause, a non-profit charitable organization.
Sawyer will be attending with other students from around the country who have been encouraged to bring something from their hometown. She was gifted prints from local photographer Todd Reed that she will share with other students.
Founding Forward is a nonprofit charity, based in Valley Forge and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that informs and engages students, teachers, and citizens through transformational educational experiences grounded in American history. Through its Spirit of America program, Founding Forward has welcomed 100,000-plus students from across the country to its private, 75-acre campus adjacent to Valley Forge National Historical Park. During the four-day program, students participate in immersive, fun, thought-provoking and engaging activities as they learn about history, civic engagement, and how to be a leader in their community.
The program includes:
- Mock debate – students engage with each other in a mock congressional debate, where they learn how to engage in civil discourse while reviewing case law.
- Freedom summit – a fast-paced shark-tank activity that encourages students to think creatively to solve real-world issues.
- Leadership workshop – students are introduced to different styles of leadership as they review the character traits of the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.
- Visits to Valley Forge and Philadelphia – history comes alive for students as expert guides provide a comprehensive and profound understanding of key locations in our nation’s history and their significance.
