LUDINGTON — Three fire departments responded to a house fire at 707 W. Ludington Ave. Sunday morning. Ludington Fire Department was initially dispatched to the fire at 11:53 a.m.

Upon arrival, Ludington Assistant Fire Chief Andy Larr reported smoke coming from the house and requested assistance from Pere Marquette Fire Department. Additional assistance by Hamlin Fire Department was also called moments later.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 30 minutes. Ludington Fire Chief John Henderson said the fire started from the building occupant using a heat gun in the northwest section of the house’s first floor. Henderson said the fire spread to other areas of the house, causing smoke damage. He said fire damage was mostly limited to the first floor, but wasn’t severe.

“The firefighters did a great job knocking this fire down quickly,” Henderson said. “It can often be a challenge to stop a fire from spreading rapidly in these old houses.”

Nobody was injured in the fire.

County equalization records show the house being owned and occupied by Robert L. James.

Ludington Police Department also assisted at the scene. Ludington Avenue between Ferry Street and Lakeshore Drive was closed during the fire. As of 1:30 p.m., Ludington Fire Department was still on scene and the eastbound lane of Ludington Avenue was still closed as firefighters awaited for Consumers Energy to shut down electricity to the house.

UPDATE: Firefighters cleared the scene and Ludington Avenue was re-opened about 1:55 p.m.
