SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has identified the driver who died in a single vehicle crash on Sugar Grove Road. Shari Nott, 59, died as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

Emergency personnel responded to the vehicle crash just after 1 p.m.,  Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the 3000 block of East Sugar Grove Road.

Nott was the only occupant of the vehicle. Cole said preliminary investigation findings show the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Sugar Grove Road when it ran off the north side of the road just west of Stephens Road.

The vehicle rolled several times, striking a tree and a utility pole, then catching fire and ejecting the driver.  According to law enforcement officers on scene, initial bystander reports indicated that the vehicle had been unoccupied. Upon further investigation, shortly after arriving, police discovered Nott about 30 feet from the vehicle.

Nott was transported by ambulance to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Emergency personnel responding on scene included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Fountain Area Fire Department, Custer Fire Department and Life EMS. Also assisting on scene were Mason County Road Commission and Great Lakes Energy.

The crash caused Sugar Grove Road between Custer and Stephens roads to be closed for over three hours.

Cole said the crash remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team.
