SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — Emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle crash just after 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the 3000 block of East Sugar Grove Road.
The single occupant of the vehicle, a female, was ejected during the crash. The vehicle appeared to be heading westbound on Sugar Grove Road when it left the roadway just west of Stephens Road. The vehicle struck a tree and a utility pole. It appeared to have rolled from front to back several times resulting in the driver to be ejected about 30 feet. The vehicle then caught on fire and was fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on scene.
According to law enforcement officers on scene, initial bystander reports indicated that the vehicle had been unoccupied. Upon further investigation, shortly after arriving, police discovered the driver. She was transported by ambulance to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital and was expected to be transported by helicopter to a Grand Rapids trauma center.
Emergency personnel responding on scene included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Fountain Area Fire Department, Custer Fire Department and Life EMS. Also assisting on scene were Mason County Road Commission and Great Lakes Energy.
The crash caused Sugar Grove Road between Custer and Stephens roads to be closed for over three hours.
Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, on scene, said more information will be released following the preliminary investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team. Cole did confirm that speed was most likely a factor in the crash.
