LUDINGTON — American Legion Post #76 Edwin H. Ewing, Sons of American Legion (SAL) Squadron 76 is sponsoring the 2024 veteran cemetery wreath program, Wreaths Across Mason County”
“Our objective is to lay as many wreaths as possible on veteran graves in Mason County cemeteries,” said Mike Burch, second vice commander of the SAL and co-chairman of the project.
The organization is seeking funds from the public to assist. SAL Squadron 76 is a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
“We are asking families and friends of deceased veterans as well as interested citizens to make a minimum donation of $25 to sponsor a wreath. This minimum donation covers the cost of the wreath and the stake to present the wreath at the grave site. All wreath materials will be purchased locally.”
Burch said SAL members will volunteer to assemble the stakes to the wreaths and also distribute the wreaths. Placement will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14. They will be removed in January or February.
“Our volunteers will place the wreath with the dignity and respect our veterans deserve,” Burch said. “We will say his or her name along with a salute.”
Donations may be sent payable and sent to American Legion Post 76, 318 N. James St., Ludington, MI 49431, attention Bob Mitchell. Write “wreaths” in the memo line. If the donor would like a wreath placed at a particular veteran’s grave, the name of the deceased veteran, cemetery and as much detail as possible about grave location included.
A check or cash can also be hand delivered to the legion post. Deadline for donations is Dec. 1.
“We want to thank those who participate in this program,” Burch said. “Our deceased veterans deserve this recognition during the holiday season.”
Committee members said they also could use help identifying veterans graves.
