SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central Upper Elementary Principal Kevin Kimes is passionate about assuring that each of his students learn in a safe and healthy environment. For several years, he has taught the student body about anti-bullying by holding an assembly for each grade, three through five, every fall. Kimes has even written a book and a song about the cause.

“Students can’t learn when they don’t feel safe,” Kimes said. “I have zero tolerance for bullying and it is dealt with swiftly in this school.”

During the assemblies, Kimes and Student Success Specialist Lori Schneider, talk to the students about how to deal with a bully and what examples of bullying are. A skit is performed showing samples of how someone can confront a bully without causing further conflict. At the end, the students sign a pledge promising to not bully.

“These are lessons that these kids can take with them for the rest of their lives,” Kimes said. “Unfortunately, bullying isn’t behavior that is limited to childhood.”
