Trooper Butterfield memorial service scheduled for Monday

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP —The annual memorial service honoring fallen Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield will be held on Monday, Sept. 9 beginning at 6 p.m. Butterfield was killed on duty by a gunman on Sept. 9, 2013 while conducting a routine traffic stop on Custer Road north of Townline Road. A memorial now commemorates the site.

Butterfield was 42-years-old and lived in Grant Township. He was assigned to the MSP Hart post. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. The ceremony will include color guard from MSP and local law enforcement along with the Allied Veterans of Mason County. Members of Fountain Area Fire Department will also be participating.

Custer Road between Townline and Freeman roads will be closed during the short ceremony.
