LUDINGTON — Lakeshore Food Club will hold its annual fundraiser Harvesting Hope on Thursday, Sept. 12 at The Lake House: Lake Michigan Venue, 704 Maritime Dr. The event was formerly known as Empty Bowls.
“This fundraiser supports all of our programming,” said O’Nealya Gronstal, executive director of Lakeshore Food Club. “We are serving approximately 125 families a day through the food club, and the need isn’t going away. In fact it’s increasing.”
The Lakeshore Food Club, located at 920 E. Tinkham Ave., is a nonprofit grocery store for Mason County residents and those who work or have a household member who attends school in Mason County and are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
Additionally, the organization operates Lakeshore Food 4 Kids, a program that provides weekend food supplies for Ludington Area Schools and West Shore Educational Service District students, along with the Wolfpack Food Club inside Gateway to Success Academy in Scottville.
“The funds raised at this event assures our continuing operations as well as supporting our vision to expand our services,” Gronstal said. “While our program has had great success in Ludington, we realize that a large percentage of our members do not live in the immediate Ludington area and that transportation can be a challenge. Our next goal is to expand our services into eastern Mason County. In order to do that we need to secure a warehouse. We also would like to see a food club in every school district in the county. We want to get fresh, healthy food into the homes of those children. We can’t send dairy or fresh foods in backpacks.”
Harvesting Hope will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12. Tickets are $100 each or $1,000 for a table of eight premium seats. Sponsorships are also available.

Historical Society to hold second annual gala
LUDINGTON — The Mason County Historical Society will hold its second annual gala on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Stearns Hotel. The event is a major fundraiser for the Society.
“We held our first gala last year to coincide with the Ludington sesquicentennial and it was a big hit,” said Rebecca Berringer, executive director the historical society. “The event included skits that featured Ludington historical characters, which we will be doing again this year.”
This year’s featured skit will be a short play featuring the fictional character Oswald Crumb, who was created by artist/entrepreneur Robert Stearns.
The event, which begins at 7 p.m., will also feature a presentation by James Jensen, president of the historical society, dinner, music and dancing. Attendees are encouraged to dress in historical clothing (the era of their choosing).
The cost is $75 per person.
The Mason County Historical Society is a non-profit charitable organization that was founded in 1937. While at one time the Society was supported by a local tax millage, it has operated autonomously, without taxpayer support, for over 30 years. Its mission is to preserve and present Mason County’s rich history, inspiring visitors to appreciate and engage with their heritage. The Society owns and operates Historic White Pine Village in Pere Marquette Township, the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum in Ludington and the Mason County Research Center in downtown Ludington.
