A free Dementia Support Program from the Alzheimer’s Association of Michigan will be introduced at meetings Thursday, August 8 at both the Ludington Senior Center and the Scottville Area Senior Center. The information will be shared at the regular monthly Alzheimer’s support group meetings at the two centers. The support group at the Scottville center meets at 11 a.m. while the Ludington meeting begins at 1 p.m. Interested Mason County residents are invited to attend either meeting.
“This is a remarkable program which provides valuable assistance to individuals and families caring for someone with dementia,” said Andrea Morrell, director of the Ludington center.
The program is designed to help those caring for someone with memory loss at home. If either individual is aged 60 or older, one of the licensed social workers from the Alzheimer’s Association will come to the caregiver’s home or meet with them virtually to help address caregiving concerns and behaviors as well as create a customized care plan, provide dementia education and connect caregivers with community resources.
“The potential benefits are extraordinary and we encourage anyone helping a loved one through dementia to attend one of the meetings,” said Bill Kerans, Scottville center director.
Topics discussed at the meetings may include: coping strategies, effective communication, grief and loss, planning for the future, problem solving, and understanding behaviors. This program is provided with financial support from the Older Americans Act Family Caregiver Support Program.

The Scottville Area Senior Center is located at 140 S. Main in Scottville; the Ludington Senior Center is located at 308 S. Rowe St. in Ludington.
