PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Last Sunday, 97 children were given free airplane rides during the annual Young Eagles event hosted by Chapter 772 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (Mason County Pilots’ Association) at the Mason County Airport. Seven pilots volunteered their time, expertise, airplanes and fuel to provide free rides. One pilot’s plane got a lot of attention around town. Phil Bozek of southeastern Michigan brought his 1950s era Fouga CM.170 Magister French-built jet and provided rides to teens. The jet made several passes over Ludington and the lakeshore.
Throughout its existence, the local Young Eagles program has provided annual free airplane rides to over 5,000 children.
In addition to the event, the pilots’ association provides scholarships to children interested in becoming pilots. This year’s scholarship recipient, Kevin Herrema, a Mason County Eastern High School student, will be attending the EAA’s Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wis.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund may send money to: MCPA, Attn. John Kreinbrink, 1037 N. Ferry St., Ludington, MI 49431. MCPA is a non-profit charitable organization.
