Matt Mazeika

Mathew John Mazeika, 84, of Ludington, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Monday, July 1, 2024.  Matt was born in February 12, 1940, in Detroit, to Veronica and Matthew Mazeika, the oldest of five boys.

Except for a brief time in Texas and two years in the Army, Matt lived in Mason County nearly his entire life. He worked a variety of jobs, including: auto paint and body work, the carferries, Great Lakes Castings, Stokely’s and finally 27 years at Jackson Jordan/Harsco Rail.

Matt is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Barbara; his children, John Mazeika of Florida, and his daughter, Tammy Steadham (Scott) of Cantonment Fla.; his brothers, Mike and Ted; five stepchildren; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Matt was preceded in death by: his parents; his brothers, Jimmy and Timmy; and his nieces, Cheryl and Daisy.

Matt was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved being in the woods during the fall. He spent much of his free time building and repairing firearms, making knives using deer antlers for handles, and making and carving canes. Whether it was just a drive in the country or a road trip to Florida to see his children, Matt enjoyed traveling and spending time with Barb.

Following Matt’s wishes a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Custer, with Father Dan DePew presiding.  The date and time will be posted once it has been set in August.

Cemetery in Fountain.Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
