Calvin Warren Young, 76, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Free Soil, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

Calvin was born on April 1, 1948, the son of Robert Louis and Spencer (Thomas) Young, in Manistee.

In 1966, he graduated from Free Soil High School. On September 23, 1972, he married his forever love, Josephine (Hall) Young, sharing over 50 years of companionship before his passing. For 30 years he was employed by Dow Chemical, working as a machinist. In 2000, he was able to retire and enjoy the things he loved most.

Calvin was a problem solver. He enjoyed the challenges of thinking outside the box and making new solutions to everyday tasks. He not only did this at work, but also in his home. Due to the physical limitations he faced with arthritis, he came up with some interesting twists on everyday tools. He enjoyed teachings bibles truths, taking pictures, playing chess, swimming, and fixing anything he could get his hands on.

Calvin is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Josephine Young; children, Janine (Walter) Johnson, Gail Young, Kevin Young, Deandre Young, and Deasa Young; grandchildren, Havilyn Young, Savion Young, and Jara Johnson; sisters, Ophelia White, Marla Muse, and Rebecca Young; and sisters-in-law, Cather (Lyford) Young, Donna (Jerry) Young, Thelma (Jordan) Young, Carolyn (Charles) Young, and Vonzella (Dwight) Young.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Spencer Young; sisters, Darlene Young, and Aquilla Crawford; brothers, Robert “Bobby” Young, Lyford Young, Edward Young, Jerry Young, Charles Young, Dwight Young, William (Jordan) Young, Herbert Young, Ted Young, and Maxwell Young.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington at 1:30 p.m. Visitation begins at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited to a meal at the funeral home immediately following the service.
