PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — This week students entering grades four through 12 have been learning about aviation during a Summer Aviation Camp being held at Mason County Airport. This is the second year the program has been offered here.

Camp Director Ginger DeVillers said the participants learn a variety of skills related to flying. Participation in the camp can be credited toward flight training to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration winged aircraft pilot certification. Besides classroom work, students also gain flight experience as well. Local pilots have volunteered their time to assist with the program.

The program is run through Plainwell Aviation and STEM Academy with support from MISTEM Region 9. The Mason County program has included a combination of return and first year students.

In addition to being offered in Mason County, the program is also being offered in Wexford and Mecosta counties.

MiSTEM Region 9 Director Brian Dotson said he was able to secure a grant with the Michigan Department of Education through Ferris State University to help cover some of tuition costs along with other expenses of all three programs.

MiSTEM Region 9 is housed at the West Shore Educational Facility.
