LUDINGTON — The eighth Fish on for Freedom veteran fishing tournament will take place on Friday, June 14 with a 6 a.m. tournament-style kickoff at the Ludington pier heads. The tournament, which began in 2015, is a free event to military veterans. Charter boat owners and captains donate their time to bring veterans fishing on Lake Michigan.
At 11:45 a.m. the tournament boats will assemble outside the harbor. At noon, a boat parade will head back into the channel, led by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, and local emergency vessels. Boats carrying participating veterans, captains, and crew members, will make their way down the channel for the commencement of the Welcome Home Procession where participants will display their big catch of the day as they troll to dock.
Community members are encouraged to come out to the Loomis Street boat launch and along the pier to celebrate the men and women who have served in the military. A 12:30 p.m. weigh-in will take place at Harbor View Marina following docking. A lunch will be provided for participants at 1 p.m. at Ludington American Legion Post #76, 318 N. James St. followed by an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m.
