Sandcastles offering free admission for SNAP recipients

LUDINGTON — Sandcastles Children’s Museum, 129 E. Ludington Ave., is offering free admission on Thursdays to families that receive food assistance through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program.

“This is something we have been looking at for quite some time, and the board felt it was the right time for a pilot program to gauge interest,” said Kristin Korendyke, executive director. “We will be offering this free admission day for families receiving food assistance starting this Thursday, Feb. 29 and running until June 6 when we begin our summer season. At that time we will evaluate the program and decide the best way to move forward with reducing barriers to the museum for all families.”

Museum hours on Thursdays are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will need to present their SNAP card.

Thursdays at Sandcastles are titled “Preschool Sensory Play,” activities such as a sensory table, a special craft, and an interactive color changing light are available for play.

“The board of Sandcastles Children’s Museum is always looking for ways that we can make the museum more accessible to everyone in our community,” said Sherlyn Houk, president of the Sandcastles board of directors. “Especially for those community members who have never experienced Sandcastles before.  We are hoping that offering this discount will both promote our new schedule and that we will see new faces in the museum.”
