LHS band students rank high in recent competitions
LUDINGTON — The Ludington High School Jazz Ensemble recently earned top awards in the Central Michigan University Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Jazz Weekend. The ensemble earned Most Outstanding Band, Most Outstanding Rhythm Section, and Most Outstanding Drummer for Quinn Merchant in the class B division.
The Jazz Ensemble includes students from Ludington High School and OJ DeJonge Middle School. Class takes place during zero hour at LHS, which occurs prior to the regular school day.
The Jazz Ensemble members include:

- Annika Sherman – Alto Saxophone
- Kasen Carlsen – Alto Saxophone
- Joe Kline – Tenor Saxophone
- Laela Rice – Tenor Saxophone
- Gabe Gamez – Baritone Saxophone
- Joey Gustafson – Trumpet
- Katie Gronstal – Trumpet
- Ethan Collins – Trumpet
- John Klomp — Trumpet
- Jasper Sak – Trombone
- Greg Schrader – Trombone
- Aidan Saucedo – Trombone
- Matt Hansen – Trombone
- Luke Kwietniewski – Trombone
- Joseph Janicki – Guitar
- Maggie Autrey – Piano/Trumpet
- Isaiah Boerema — Piano
- Walt Autrey – Bass
- Quinn Merchant — Drums
In addition to the Jazz Ensemble awards, several Ludington Band members attended the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District 1 Solo and Ensemble held at Cadillac Middle School on Saturday, February 10.
All students that attended earned the top rating for their performances and qualified for State Solo and Ensemble to be held on March 16. Those students include Ben Coleman on piano, Maggie Autrey on piano, Hannah Rudzki on flute, Lauren Rieman on tenor saxophone, Jasper Sak on trombone, and Mya Hindman on tuba.
