Obituary: James Morris Mazur, 69, of Victory Township
James Morris Mazur, 69, of Victory Township, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 25, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.
Jim was born on July 20, 1954 in Ludington to Phyllis (Slapinski) and Anthony Mazur. He graduated from Mason County Central High School in 1972 and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan University. Jim married Debra (Wigren) Mazur on October 8, 1983.
For 39 years, Jim worked as a pattern maker at Great Lakes Castings in Ludington before retiring in 2015. He was also very involved in his community and served as a Victory Township trustee for many years before eventually becoming supervisor.
If determination alone could keep someone alive, Jim Bob would still be in his garage working on his lifelong dream of restoring his 1947 Willys Jeep. If you knew Jim, you knew that he would never give up and he didn’t. He worked on that Jeep between cancer treatments and got so close to completing it.
Jim was an avid U of M fan and got to see them play in the Rose Bowl. And, believe it or not, his beleaguered Detroit Lions had a winning season. He was called “upstairs” and granted the best seat in the house to watch them in the NFC Championship game.
His was a life well lived and well loved.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Debra; son, Andy (Amanda) Mazur; daughter, Allison Mazur (Jordan Gumm); grandchildren, Edie and Harvey Mazur, Ridley Mazur-Gumm; sister, Jean (Bob) Taylor; sisters-in-law, Vicki Hoss, Barbara Wigren; nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and friends.
A memorial gathering will be held in the summer at Victory Township Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s honor can be made to Harbor Hospice, 1050 W. Western Avenue, Suite 400, Muskegon, MI 49441.
Arrangements were entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington, www.OakGroveLudington.com.
