FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — A fire burned about four to five acres in the Manistee National Forest late Tuesday afternoon. The fire occurred on North Schoenherr Road, a seasonal county road, that runs south of County Line Road. The area is the boundary between Free Soil and Meade townships, but the majority of the fire took place on the Free Soil Township side.

Emergency crews that responded included Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, Filer Township Fire Department (Manistee), Norman Fire Department (Manistee), Stronach Fire Department (Manistee), U.S. Forest Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Mason County Sheriff’s Office thermal imaging drone. Also on scene was Fountain Fire Department Auxiliary.

Free Soil/Meade Fire Chief Vince Williams requested an investigation from the U.S. Forest Service to determine the origins of the fire. Williams said the dry and warm conditions were a cause for concern but firefighters were able to contain the fire within a couple of hours.
