Man dies following water incident Sunday
SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — A 78-year-old man died Sunday following an incident in Lake Michigan. Emergency personnel were initially dispatched to Summit Park at 3:07 p.m. According to Riverton Township Fire Chief Joe Cooper, the man was pulled from Lake Michigan and CPR was started. Cooper said he believed the man had been on a paddle board, or similar device. However, Cooper said he was not sure if it was a confirmed drowning.
Troopers from Michigan State Police Hart Post were the first on scene and were in charge of the investigation. However, no information was released today from the MSP. Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said deputies from his office responded and assisted. Cole said the incident was not witnessed and it is being considered a suspected drowning due to the lake conditions at the time. Cole said the sheriff’s office marine patrol attempted to respond from the Ludington harbor but turned around due to 8-foot waves.
Cooper said an autopsy was being performed which would determine cause of death.
