Obituary: Sally Thompson, 71, of Fountain
Sally Jo Thompson, 71, of Fountain, passed away Wednesday May 17, 2023. Sally was born December 16, 1951, the daughter of Stanley Saya and Lois (Taibl) Saya. She graduated from Mason County Eastern High School in 1970. On November 7, 1970, Sally married the love of her life, Robert E. Thompson, sharing 52 years together before her passing.
Sally dedicated her time to Mason County Eastern Schools. She worked as a food service worker for 25 years before being promoted to Food Service Director for five years. She retired on June 30, 2014, after 30 wonderful years of service. Even through retirement, Sally will remain the best lunch lady around. Sally was an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and an active member in Fountain Action Youth Activities.
In her early years, Sally liked to keep busy. She enjoyed catering events, or helping her husband throw the best pig roasts. She could often be found morel mushroom hunting and whenever she had the time, she’d visit family in Allegan. Sally volunteered at the Fountain Horse Pull and took part in various Fountain Action Youth activities. She loved camping with her friends and family and playing with her grandchildren. Later in life, Sally continued to stay busy. She was known to kick butt in cribbage and enjoyed watching her westerns! Sally could spend hours talking about old stories with her family and always found time to watch homemade family videos. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family and still hunted for morel mushrooms. Her family will always remember her as the lady that knew dates, if you needed to know anything she was the one to call.
Sally is survived by her husband, Bob Thompson; children, Rob (Lisa) Thompson, and Susan Thompson; grandchildren, Renae (Alex) Smith, Andy Thompson, and Natalie Sawdey; siblings, Steve (Teresa) Saya, Matt (Jill) Saya, and Paul (Renee) Saya; sisters-in-law, Karen Barnes, Joyce Mohrland, Donna O’Bryant, Jackie Thompson, Louise Thompson, Sally (Krueger) Thompson, and Deb Saya.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley, Lois, and Virginia Saya; infant sister, Lois Saya; brother, Mark Saya; father-in-law, Paul Thompson; mother-in-law, Lucille Thompson; and son-in-law, Dale Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at noon at Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington with visitation starting at 11 a.m. Following her graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Custer Township, a luncheon will be provided at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Custer.
