Obituary: Mary Sherlock, 83, of Ludington
Mary Louise Sherlock passed away peacefully in her Ludington home on May 8, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 83.
Mary was born in Ludington on November 28, 1939, to the late Alvin and Arvida (Anderson) Garcia. A graduate of the class of 1957 of Ludington High School, Mary married her husband of 52 years, William Lee Sherlock of Ludington, on December 11, 1970. Bill and Mary relocated to Jenison for many years, but continued to summer in Ludington, eventually returning to their beloved hometown permanently upon Bill’s retirement.
Mary was a career bookkeeper and provided her expertise to a number of employers in both Grand Rapids and the Ludington area, her last being Pentwater Wire of Pentwater.
Mary was known for her deadpan sense of humor, acerbic wisecracks, and strong advocacy for the underdog. Mary lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; she greatly relished family gatherings, Ludington summers, the Fourth of July, going out for breakfast with her long-time gang of girlfriends, sitting on their big porch watching the world go by, going to “Hoyt’s” or The Grand, for a burger, or simply “bummin’ around town.” After retirement, Bill and Mary became snowbirds, and spent many happy years making friends and embarking on adventures at their winter home in Zephyrhills, Florida.
More than anything, Mary loved to love her family. Her husband – her “Billy,” sons Barry and Tom, and her grandchildren, were the center of her universe. She doted on them shamelessly and, debatably, spoiled them rotten. If one happened to love someone she loved, they were also included in the deal.
Mary will be greatly missed by her loving husband, William Sherlock of Ludington; her sons Barry (Julie) Sherlock of Ludington, and Thomas (Naoka) Sherlock of Chicago; her grandchildren, Caitlyn Sherlock, Cassandra Sherlock, and Ira Lee Sherlock; her sister, Cara Garcia; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at St. Simon Catholic Church in Ludington, with Father Wayne B. Wheeler presiding. Interment will be in Pere Marquette Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter would be gratefully appreciated.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
