County board to discuss school resource officers
PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Board of Commissioners will consider approving a request from Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole for the addition of a second school resource officer (SRO) when it meets for its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 14.
The commission agenda includes a service agreement between Mason County and Ludington Area School District, an agreement with the county and Mason County Eastern Schools and a request to hire an additional school resource officer.
The agreement with MCE is a three year agreement with the option to renew automatically. MCE’s share of the costs is $63,000 a year with the county paying the balance of other costs including equipment, training, uniforms, and a vehicle. The agreement with LASD calls for the school district to cover $76,890 annually along with the county covering the additional costs identical to the MCE agreement.
The LASD SRO will be assigned to Ludington Elementary School, located in Pere Marquette Township, but would be available to serve at the district’s other buildings as needed. LASD also has an agreement with the City of Ludington for SRO services which covers the school buildings located in the city limits.
Pere Marquette Township is also being asked to financially support the SRO position.
The board of commissioners meets at 9 a.m. at the Mason County Airport Terminal, 5300 W. US 10.
