Police negotiate with suspects for an hour before they surrender
BRANCH TOWNSHIP — Mason County sheriff’s deputies and Michigan State Police troopers negotiated with three suspects for an hour before they were arrested Sunday, Feb. 5, in the 7800 block of East Chickasaw Trail, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
Deputies and troopers were called to the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m. “regarding a reported assault and a man with a gun call,” said Sheriff Cole.
“Law enforcement arrived on scene and found the front door of the residence in question standing open, however, no one was located on the property. From past contacts with the residence, law enforcement knew of a red Dodge Charger that was associated with the home and a ‘Be on the Lookout’ was issued to the surrounding areas.
“At around 4:45 p.m., law enforcement in the area spotted a red Dodge Charger pull into the driveway of the residence in question. Deputies and troopers attempted to call the occupants of the vehicle out of the car, however, two refused to exit, while the driver exited and started swearing at, and demanding law enforcement leave. The Mason-Oceana 911 center made calls into the suspect vehicle attempting to get the occupants to exit the car, however, they refused those requests as well.”
After an hour of talking with them, the suspects were taken into custody. A 66-year-old Scottville woman was arrested on an outstanding Muskegon County warrant for failure to appear and methamphetamine possession. The driver, a 38-year-old Branch woman, was arrested for resisting and opposing police, and a 32-year-old Baldwin man was arrested for resisting and opposing police and two misdemeanor warrants issued by the Ludington Police Department for failure to appear on assault charges.
