Fire destroys Tallman Lake house

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief

SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP — Fire destroyed a Tallman Lake area home early Monday morning. Four fire departments were dispatched to 2372 N. 20th St. beginning at 12:31 a.m. Fountain Area Fire Department Chief Jeremy Goble said the structure was engulfed in flames upon the arrival of the first fire unit.

Goble said the original structure was a single-wide mobile home with additions built on all sides of the original structure. “This caused a challenge to fighting the fire,” Goble said. Eventually, an excavator, owned by Bob Peters, was brought in to the scene to help separate the structures.

“We had to put 20,000 gallons of water on that structure,” Goble said.

Goble said the homeowner was transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. He said the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Emergency units responding included Fountain Area Fire Department, Branch Township Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and Life EMS. Also assisting on the scene was Mason County Road Commission and Fountain Fire Department Auxiliary.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 7:45 a.m.
