Suspect uses officer’s flashlight to assault him during scuffle.
The officer was treated at ER for head injuries.
LUDINGTON — A 27-year-old male officer with the Ludington Police Department was struck in the head with a flashlight by a 39-year-old male suspect in the 800 block of West Loomis Street Thursday, Nov. 3, shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to Interim Ludington Police Chief Steve Wietrzykowski.
The officer deployed his taser to subdue the man who was arrested on charges of felonious assault of a police officer, resisting and opposing police, and domestic assault and battery.
The officer was treated in the emergency room at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for head injuries and was released, said Wietrzykowski.
Ludington police were called to a domestic disturbance at the residence involving a 54-year-old Ludington woman and a 39-year-old Ludington man. “The woman told central dispatch she had been assaulted by the man.” Two Ludington officers — the 27-year-old officer and a 43-year-old male officer — arrived to investigate.
“The 43-year-old officer tried to engage the man in conversation to find out what happened. The man told the officer to ‘f— off’ and grabbed onto the officer. The officer told the man he was under arrest. The man grabbed the officer by the neck and pinned him to the wall. The 27-year-old officer came to help. All three went to the floor inside the home. During the struggle, the man was able to get a hold of the 27-year-old officer’s flashlight and strike him at least two times in the head with the metal flashlight.”
The suspect was also taken to ER to be medically evaluated and have the taser probes removed. He was lodged in the Mason County Jail. The female victim and the 43-year-old officer were not injured. Members of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office assisted on scene and at the hospital, said Wietrzykowski.
