3 seek Republican nomination for newly formed 102nd state House seat.
By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief.
Michigan will hold its primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The primary election is held by each political party to nominate a candidate who will run in the November 8 General Election. Among those candidates are three people running to be the Republican nominee to represent the majorities of Mason and Oceana counties in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Currently Mason County is part of the 101st House District which also includes Manistee, Benzie and Leelanau counties. The new district, which will cover most of Mason County, is the 102nd district. The new district includes parts of Manistee, Mason, Oceana and Muskegon counties:
Manistee County: Manistee Township, Brown Township, Filer Township, Stronach Township, City of Manistee; Mason County: All municipalities except Meade, Sheridan, Branch and Logan (these are in the new 101st district); Oceana County: All municipalities except Leavitt and Colfax; Muskegon County: White River Township, Montague Township, Blue Lake Township, Holton Township, Fruitland Township, Cedar Creek Township, northwestern Dalton Township, cities of Whitehall and Montague.
Three candidates — Ryan Roberts of Hart, Andrew Sebolt of Hart and Curt VanderWall of Ludington — are seeking the nomination for the Republican seat while one person, Brian Hosticka of Whitehall, is seeking the nomination for the Democrat seat. It is MCP’s practice to only feature contested races in the primary election preview articles. An interview will be scheduled with the Democrat candidate following the primary election.
All three Republican candidates were contacted by MCP and scheduled for interviews. Roberts failed to show up for his scheduled interview and has never reached out to MCP to explain why he did not show up nor has he requested to reschedule. The interviews with Sebolt and VanderWall will proceed this introductory article.
