Manistee man charged in shooting of Free Soil man.

FILER TOWNSHIP (Manistee County) — A 37-year-old Manistee man has been charged for allegedly shooting a 31-year-old Free Soil Friday evening. Leonard Roger Sannes was arraigned in Manistee County’s 85th District Court and charged with assault with intent to murder, felonious assault and two counts of felony firearm. 

According to Manistee County Sheriff Brian Gutowski, Manistee County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched about 10 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2022, to a residence in the 2200 block of Maple Road, near Adamczak Road. While en route to the scene, deputies were advised that a male subject had been shot in the head and was being driven to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital by private vehicle. The vehicle carrying the victim was met at the Shell gas station at US 31 and First Street in Manistee by Manistee City Fire Department and then transported to the hospital by ambulance. 

“Shortly after deputies arrived on scene, dispatchers from Manistee Central Dispatch were able to convince the suspect to exit his residence — unarmed — and he surrendered to law enforcement without incident,” Gutowski said. The suspect was lodged at the Manistee County Jail. 

The shooting victim was transferred to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where he was treated for his injuries and has since been released from the hospital. 

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Manistee City Police Department, Manistee City Fire Department, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety, the Michigan State Police, and Manistee County Central Dispatch.
