US 31 crash sends 4 to hospital.

PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A single vehicle crash on US 31 resulted in four people being transported to the hospital. Emergency crews were called to US 31, just south of the Pere Marquette Highway offramp, at 3:40 p.m. According to Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Demny, on the scene, the crash occurred when the two adult occupants allegedly got into an argument. The Pontiac Torrent was driven by a 28-year-old Holland woman. Demny said the car was northbound and initially went off the right side of the road. The driver then apparently attempted to get back on the roadway and the vehicle then went off the left side of the road and flipped over into the medium. Demny said the front passenger, a 29-year-old Holland man, was ejected from the vehicle, which apparently landed on top of him. The rear passengers were two children, ages 4-years-old and 4-months-old.

The male adult passenger received serious injuries to his extremities and head. He was transported by ambulance to Mercy Health in Muskegon. The driver received minor injuries and, long with the children, was transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. Demny said the children were secured in carseats and did not appear to be injured. A dog was also in the vehicle and was not injured. Demny said alcohol may have been a factor.

UPDATE: Trooper Demny stated that after interviewing the driver (mother) in the hospital, she revealed that the 4-month-old baby had been ejected from the vehicle. Though the baby did not appear to have injuries, hospital personnel were performing a medical evaluation.

Responding emergency units included MSP, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, Life EMS, MCSO Accident Investigation Unit and Mason County Animal Control.
