Vidak appointed to Promise Zone board.
Joan Vidak has been appointed to the Mason County Promise Zone Authority board, replacing Jason Kennedy. Vidak is the counselor at Mason County Central High School.
“Before the Promise there were often students who struggled to attend college due to financial stresses, and those who could not go on to a university after an associate degree due to college debt from the first two years,” Vidak said. “Now that the Promise is available, many students have had a door opened. Students have been able to go on to universities without the level of debt that they would have acquired otherwise.
“I think we need to continue working on getting career information out to our students so they truly know what their options are. I would also like to continue to promote a ‘college-going’ culture in our community with the understanding that ’college-going’ means any kind of post-secondary education. For example, if a student wants a welding certification or an associate degree, both are considered ‘college.’
“As a high school guidance counselor, I am invested in the youth of Mason County,” Vidak added. ”I have dedicated my career to helping students find their own success. The Mason County Promise Scholarship is a wonderful resource for our youth, and I value the opportunities that it can provide. I am honored to be part of the Promise Zone Authority Board as we work together to enrich the lives of our area students.”
Vidak will complete a term began by former Ludington Area School District Superintendent Jason Kennedy, which will continue through December 2022, with the option to renew for a four-year term. The Mason County Promise Zone Authority Board is an 11-member public board that governs the Promise Zone scholarship and related activities.
