Semi truck driver injured following freeway crash.
By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief.
SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — A 64-year-old Chicago man was injured following a single vehicle crash on US 31. Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 1:01 p.m. According to Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies on scene, the man was driving southbound on US 31 between Marrison and Washington roads. He had just went through a one-lane construction zone and the semi-truck he was driving went off the east side of the road, causing the semi and its fully loaded trailer to flip over.
The driver was pinned in the vehicle. Due to the angle of the crash, extrication of the driver took about 40 minutes. The driver was then transported by ambulance to Mercy Health hospital in Muskegon.
Sgt. Kyle Boyd of the MCSO said one witness said it appeared the driver tried to compensate for drifting off the road just as he left the roadway. The trailer was apparently full of pallets.
Emergency units responding included MCSO, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS.
The crash remains under investigation.
